The Science Behind Strength Training: What Does the Research Tell Us Regarding Healthy Aging

We all know that exercise is good for us, but what exactly are we supposed to do? In this one hour presentation, you'll learn about the latest scientific evidence on the optimal exercise prescription to improve strength and function. You'll learn some of the best exercises you can do to promote healthy aging. We'll conclude the session with an opportunity to ask your questions to the presenter and participate in a robust discussion.

This presentation will be led by Dr. Katie Starr, assistant professor at the Duke School of Medicine and scientific advisor for Vivo (teamvivo.com). Dr. Starr’s career direction was inspired at an early age watching her mother lead adults 55+ in strength training and aerobics. She learned the value of movement with age and the importance of considering age and ability in encouraging people to fitness. Her passion led her to pursue a career in gerontology. She received a B.A. in Exercise Science, M.S.M.A in Nutrition and Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of Georgia. She served as a postdoctoral scholar at Duke University’s Center for Aging and Human Development and Geriatric Fellow at Durham VA Health Care System.
